Is Your Network Strong Enough for Your Smart Home?

Consider Updating Your Home Networking Installation

Is Your Network Strong Enough for Your Smart Home?

Building a smart home is more complicated than it may seem. After all, isn't smart technology all about simplicity? With the touch of a button, you can use multiple systems, like lights, shades, AV, security, and more. And you can set timers or sensors to prompt your system to act without lifting a finger. Of course, while smart automation is designed to simplify, the systems themselves are quite complicated. One of the most commonly overlooked aspects is your home networking installation. Is your network strong enough to support every device? Keep reading to find out.

ISP Speed

The first step you may think about taking when it comes to internet speed is to check your service provider for a new plan. Many popular ISPs offer a wide range of plans, and they may have updated since the last time you checked.

But the truth is, you probably won't get the results you need merely by upgrading your service plan. You'll have to take a look at your system and the devices you have in your home.

Checking Your Modem and Router

You've likely heard the words "modem" and "router" used when talking about a network, but do you know what they mean? A modem connects you to the internet, and a router connects the internet to devices. Generally speaking, a Wi-Fi router from your ISP will contain both a modem and the wireless router technology, but they are also discrete devices that can be purchased separately.

Of course, you can also use wired connections. Hardwired connections are typically stronger and more secure than wireless connections, so it’s a good idea to use them wherever feasible for a fast, responsive home network.

Mesh Networks

When upgrading your network, you may consider installing a mesh network. That's a type of wireless system that ensures strong connections between each device without dead spots or weak signal.

Unlike a Wi-Fi network that uses a single router to supply the signal to all your devices, a mesh network consists of nodes placed throughout your home. Sometimes, the nodes are the devices themselves.

Mesh networks work well in larger homes and properties. Unlike range extenders, they don’t need to create a separate network for repeating the wireless signal from your router. They use a separate network they create to “mesh” the nodes together, freeing up wi-fi bandwidth for your connected devices.
